A handful of firms now focus upon achieving economies of scale in distribution and finance, but also seek to integrate vertically into production. Through distributing and promoting a range of films across different territories (including export territories), these firms take advantage of scale in marketing and distribution, releasing a large number of copies in cinemas in order to create crowding effects and pre-empt piracy, accessing new distribution channels such as TV and video, and investing enough in marketing to reappropriate export markets. One of the industry’s grand old production companies, Yash Raj Films had a huge hit, particularly on the export markets, in the early 1990s.
